‘Cultuur brengt verbinding en een zachte blik op de wereld om mij heen. Ik geloof erin dat een vruchtbare samenleving ontstaat door verschillen te omarmen; kunst is van iedereen.’

‘Salonners durven tegen de stroom van de hokjesgeest in te zwemmen, stellen zich juist open voor die andere mening, achtergrond of cultuur. Dat maakt me hoopvol.’ Wen van der Schaaf, artistiek directeur van Het Salon probeert een veilige plek te creëren waar je als vanzelfsprekend welkom bent. ‘Of je 20 of 80 jaar bent, aan het integreren in de Nederlandse samenleving of geboren in Aarle-Rixtel, je een drukke baan of een afstand tot de arbeidsmarkt hebt, je uiterst rechts of links stemt, je van carnaval houdt of van poëzie; Het Salon biedt een podium voor iedereen. Verschillen mogen er zijn. Omdat er met een open houding naar elkaar gekeken wordt, zijn het juist de verschillen die ervoor zorgen dat er echte verbinding ontstaat.’

‘Wat mij raakt is het lef van mensen om zichzelf te zijn en ook die ander te waarderen om wie hij is. Een podiumproductie bij ons begint met niets anders dan een groep diverse mensen, die al dan niet eerder op een podium stonden. Er is geen thema, geen titel, er zijn geen rollen, we doen niet aan scripts. Als maker gaan we op zoek naar wat een speler eigen maakt en we schrijven een rol op zijn of haar lijf. Dat levert eigenaardige kunst op, met altijd een echt mens als basis.’

‘Mijn inspiratie haal ik uit een bezoek aan de bakker en soms uit Het Nederlands Danstheater of bezoek aan Carte Blanche. De prachtige, schurende voorstellingen die zij  maken in samenwerking met mensen met een verstandelijke beperking, vind ik heel bijzonder.’

Wen van der Schaaf, artistic director of Het Salon, tries to create a safe place where you are naturally welcome. 'Whether you are 20 or 80 years old, integrating into Dutch society or born in Aarle-Rixtel, you have a busy job or a distance to the labor market, you vote far right or left, you like carnival or poetry; The Salon offers a stage for everyone. Differences may be there. Because looking at each other with an open attitude, it is precisely the differences that ensure that a real connection is created. '

'What touches me is the courage of people to be themselves and to appreciate the other person for who they are. A stage production made by us starts with a group of diverse people, who may or may not have been on stage before. There is no theme, no title, no role nor script. As a maker we look for what a player owns and we write a role made for him or her. It results in  peculiar art, always with a real person as a foundation. '

'I get my inspiration from a visit to the bakery, to the Nederlands Dans Theater or a visit to Carte Blanche. I find the beautiful, abrasive images they make in collaboration with people with intellectual disabilities very special.'
