Wilma Heuvelink past elke week op kleindochter Janne. Het bezoek aan de bibliotheek is dan hun uitje. Samen op de fiets naar de Witte Dame, in het Bibliotheekcafé wat drinken, Janne kan er met andere kinderen spelen en natuurlijk lezen en lenen ze altijd een paar boekjes. “Ik houd van ontzettend veel boeken, vooral boeken waarbij de karakters echt tot leven zijn gebracht. Ik woonde als kind in het buitengebied in Gelderland. In mijn puberteit kwam er een bibliotheek in een nabijgelegen dorp. Dat ik daar voor het eerst binnenstapte weet ik nog heel goed! Ik was verwonderd. Een plek waar je álles kan vinden wat je wilt lezen, alles kan uitzoeken. Het was een gevoel van rijkdom. Ik was een jaar of 11 toen ik De lijsterbeshoeve las. Ik weet niet meer waar dit boek over ging, maar ik heb het toch altijd onthouden. Het heeft diepe indruk gemaakt. Ik kom nog altijd graag in bibliotheken. Ik vind het heerlijk om gewoon wat rond te kijken, door verschillende boeken te bladeren. Natuurlijk weet ik niet waar het heen gaat met de toekomst van de bibliotheek, maar wel wat ik graag zou willen behouden. De bibliotheek is ook een soort gemeenschapshuis. Je ontmoet elkaar hier, drinkt koffie, studeert, leest. Er is een ongedwongen sfeer. Ook vind ik het belangrijk dat er een verscheiden collectie blijft. Je moet kunnen blijven dwalen door de boeken.”

About the rich feeling that a library can provide
“Reading is not just about learning. A child has its own fantasy, can see different things in images than you and will ask questions. Be patient with that. It’s a discovery, and that gives so much pleasure. Read with full attention with your child every day.”
Wilma Heuvelink takes care of her grandchild Janne on a weekly basis. And a visit to the library is their favorite activity together. They will bike to the Witte Dame, enjoy a drink at the library café, where Janne has the opportunity to play with other children and of course they always borrow some books.
“I love books so much, especially the books in which the different characters are really brought to life. As a child I lived in the countryside of Gelderland. At one point the town nearby got a library. I will never forget the moment I first set foot in that library! I was astonished. A place where you can find everything you want to read, where you can look up what you like to know. It was a feeling of wealth. I was about 11 years old when I read De Lijsterbeshoeve. I don’t recall what the book was about, but I always remembered. It made a deep impression on me. To this day I still like to come to the library just to look around and go through some books. Of course I don’t know what the future will bring, but I do know that I’d like to keep the library in function. A library is also a sort of community home. You can meet each other; drink coffee, study, read. There’s a casual atmosphere. Also I think it’s important that the collection of books stays diverse. You have to be able to keep getting lost in the books.”
